On Tuesday, September 1, 2009, DoD's Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and OSSI will present a live demonstration of the OSCMIS project for Government, industry, academic and open source development community representatives. After the demonstration, the meeting will be opened for discussion on the OSCMIS project and how the program can be adopted and deployed under the open source software license. Join this roundtable discussion to learn how and where DoD has used the open source model to make the CMIS suite available inside and outside of Government systems.
What is OSCMIS? In March 2009, the DISA and OSSI announced the launch of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) in order to release of an open source version of DISA's internally-developed CMIS application suite. The CMIS program is a web-based Federal administrative software suite consisting of more than 50 applications which handles human resource, training, security, acquisition and related functions for DISA's more than 16,000 users worldwide.

By releasing OSCMIS as an open source project, DISA and OSSI have worked to establish a process designed to promote the development of “contributing communities” of Government, industry, organizational and academic entities that develop, share and contribute back to the “commons” to the benefit of all. While this is a basic principal of the open source development model, DISA has demonstrated leadership through this working example of the process.
Issues to be addressed include:

OCMIS Suite Live Demonstration

Technical briefing on the OSCMIS application suite

Licensing; which OSS license was chosen and the review process and logic behind the decision

Strategic Vision of the program: How OSCMIS is used within DISA and what are the future expectations for the program

Vendor Interaction: what are the perceived benefits of this program and how can it be adopted, developed and productized by industry

Academic applications for OSCMIS

How you can obtain a copy of OSCMIS for use, distribution (internally or externally), research or other development activities
